10 February 2012 – Fashion with a cause

The Camps Bay strip was star-studded in style on Friday 10 February at the Heat magazine powered by Red Carpet Fashion Show 2012. Celebrity hosts Elana Afrika and Katlego Maboe took to the stage, introducing SA’s leading fashion giants KLuK, Port, Stefania Morland, Jagadi and a fresh new designer on the scene, Joanna Hedley, with BeachCult. The Heat glam fashion event celebrated the empowerment of women through Dermalogica’s joinFITE initiative. Red Carpet Concepts handed over a cheque of R16, 000 to the initiative.
Dermalogica didn’t shy away from spoiling its guests for a second; the goody bags for the 500 VIP guests were filled to the brim with incredible products, gifts and treats.
“All the hard work pays off in the end when you’re able to look back at what you’ve achieved and feel proud. We couldn’t have chosen a better initiative to back” says Red Carpet Concepts MD and Red Carpet Fashion Show event organizer, Jade Allen.

Be inspired by… Jane Wurwand

Jane Wurwand is the founder and owner of Dermalogica and The International Dermal Institute. She has also been instrumental in creating joinFITE.org, an empowerment initiative that aims at providing loans to women empowering them to start their own businesses.
A key turning-point was reading Half the Sky by economists Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn. I had already been thinking about Dermalogica’s 25th anniversary (2011) and the thousands of professional women our brand has guided into business through professional skincare. But something was missing.
Reading Half the Sky gave me fresh perspective on the need to empower women, and in doing so, fight poverty beyond the so-called “first world”. I began exploring ways to reach out to women who were entrepreneurs in small, rural places and villages, not to mention remote places ruined by war and genocide. It became evident that microlending was the only way to get to them. And this is how joinFITE began.
I have always advocated for women’s financial independence. It’s part of my upbringing. I was raised by a strong mother who was widowed young and never remarried. She raised us four girls with the knowledge that a woman must never depend on a man for her survival. My husband and I are raising our two teenage girls with the same viewpoint. The fact that I have two daughters who are about to enter the world as young adults definitely is part of my current thinking. I was at a fascinating summit roundtable of feminist thinkers last summer, and I spent a lot of time talking with Gloria Steinem, the legendary women’s-rights activist. I was lamenting the fact that it seemed such a vast issue; there was little we could do to make a real impact. I asked for her advice. She gave me a cool, appraising stare and said simply “Do more.”
Women inspire me, starting with my own mother, who was rock-solid. There was no question that she was the mama lion. She protected us when we needed it, but also raised us to be strong, curious, willing to share, able to solve problems, and ready to go off on our own as soon as our feet could carry us. With that gracious and powerful foundation, I have been inspired by thousands of women who have been drawn to our business. Often, their stories are far more dramatic than my own. They achieve the impossible every day, once they recognise, understand and engage their own power. It is quite literally breathtaking.
Every woman involved in FITE is just like us. If she is a mother, and 80% of the world’s women are mothers (according to the World Health Organization), she has laughed and cried and worried about her baby, whether she’s in Durban, Dubai or Dallas. Feeling that connection as a woman to other women is what drives us to take action. We write cheques for good causes, but we also roll up our sleeves and do the dirty work.
Skin, hands and touch are how I have defined myself as a professional for 30 years. I also believe that the skin-touch “experience” humanises, heals and bonds women, and people in general. I was recently in South Africa launching FITE, and my team here presented me with a handmade necklace of smooth, glossy glass beads – mostly red, which is my power-colour. The necklace was made by a woman who is a recent recipient of a FITE microloan in KwaZulu-Natal. I did not meet her when I was in South Africa this last time. To be perfectly honest, it is unlikely that I shall meet her. Rather than feel sadness in this, I feel the weight and smoothness and coolness of the small, red beads that she wove for me to wear. It is as if this woman is saying: “I feel you. I know you, because you are just like me. I know that you are there, and I am here, too.”
Health and beauty are not the same conversation. I live in Los Angeles, where there is too much emphasis on beauty: tall, slim, fair, blonde, a woman who is perpetually 22 years old, with large eyes, perky breasts, flat belly and long legs. This is a dominant “meme” around the world today, sustained by the entertainment industry and other media. To me, beauty means authenticity. Of course, this does not preclude colouring your hair if you want to. The beauty comes from knowing why you are colouring your hair, if you do, or having Botox or cosmetic surgery, if this is your choice. I think that this is the aspect of aging no one talks about. People who look great in their skin at 50, or 60, or beyond, are people who know who they are, and who really live in that place.
You must be authentic to be beautiful. I recommend the great children’s book, The Velveteen Rabbit, to friends who seem traumatised by the aging process. It’s the story of how toys become real when their stitches and button-eyes are literally rubbed off by the little boy who loves them. What you ingest and inject to stay young and beautiful can only “undo” so much. The truth really starts to tell itself once the perfect mask of collagen and elastin begins to give way.
Health is another story. I swear by my pilates classes, and many glasses of filtered water throughout the day. I love lifting weights and running, and I know that intensive physical activity is key for me to maintain energy, focus and clarity. Finding the right physical exercise, the right duration and the right regimen for your own body is key, though. There is no one monolithic fitness approach which works for everyone. Swimming, kick-boxing or rock-climbing may be better for you personally. You have to find out – then get off the couch and do it.
I’m also a good eater. The machine needs fuel. I have never been one to starve myself! I just make sure to avoid the “white poisons”, white flour and white sugar.
Living in Southern California, I am blessed to have fresh fruit, veggies and salads at my fingertips year-round, and I feel sure that big heaps of greens are key to health, and beauty, for that matter. There also are those moments when I really enjoy a great pizza, not to mention a martini. I’m no purist, and I don’t believe in this puritanical notion of “balance”. We go off the rails, and then we need to pull ourselves back into line. It’s what makes us interesting.
The campaign
The objective of joinFITE.org is to lend financial backing to 25 000 female entrepreneurs worldwide between 2011 and 2012. The second “wave” of this objective is to re-invest the money that the FITE recipients pay back. The cycle of debt-payment and re-investment of assets is the heart of microlending success, and expands the sphere of influence created by FITE exponentially. FITE can literally put millions of women into business for themselves, if you follow this algorithm. The idea is simple: through buying a specially marked Dermalogica product, and using the unique code, or by donating directly, you choose the recipient you would like to help. You get to read her story, and follow her journey as she achieves her goal.
Longevity supports this worthy cause and hopes you will too, by adopting your own loan recipient on www.joinFITE.org. As Gloria Steinem says: “Do more.” We here at Longevity have taken Wurwand and Steinem up on this challenge – and invite you to do so too…
