Destination Dermalogica – For all the latest news
April and May have both been extremely busy but exciting months for all of us at Dermalogica. In April, we not only hosted the founders of Dermalogica, Jane and Ray Wurwand, together with other key international Dermalogica delegates but we also launched our latest product innovation, the MultiVitamin Power Serum – all amidst the renovation of our Johannesburg head office.
Have a look at some before and after pictures of our offices and notice how exquisite they now look, the presence of Dermalogica touches every room.
Launching the new MultiVitamin Power Serum – The Journey
We successfully launched the new MultiVitamin Power Serum in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban between the 23rd and 25th of April. Guests were taken on a journey to Destination Dermalogica, where they were given the opportunity to sample the powerful, vitamin enriched serum at our brand new skin bar, witness the AGE Smart microZone treatment which now incorporates the MultiVitamin Power Serum and soak up new product information. With the core focus of the event centred on vitamins, guest sampled delightful vitamin enriched foods, were treated to Vitamin Waters on arrival and got to take home this fantastic addition to the award-winning Age Smart category.
Bieber Mania – The Ultimate Clean Start Experience
Dermalogica together with Seventeen Magazine ran a fantastic competition for Seventeen readers during the month of April. Teens in Cape Town and Johannesburg were given the opportunity to win the Ultimate Clean Start experience, along with tickets to the Justin Bieber concert and… what a fantastic experience it was for both the winners and Dermalogica staff. The day started off with some delicious lunch with the Clean Start team before winners attended a Clean Start workshop where they were able to engage and play with the products. They were then treated to a make-up presentation by one of our incredible Dermal Authority members, Alex Botha. The girls of course, had to look their best for the Justin Bieber concert.
After the momentous build-up of excitement, the time had finally arrived to set off to the stadium for the Believe concert. Everyone hopped onto the bus with their Clean Start goodie bags and snack packs and headed to the capital of Bieber Fever. Apart from the glass-shattering screams, the concert was absolutely tremendous and every winner thoroughly enjoyed themselves, a superb day and win for Team Clean Start.
Local love at the SAMAS
We at Dermalogica South Africa like to support local talent and therefore thought it would be the perfect fit to be part of the South African Music Awards this year. Each SAMA attendee received a Dermalogica gift bag which included trial sizes of the Special Cleansing Gel, Multi Active Toner, Skin Smoothing Cream and MultiVitamin Power Firm. With stars in their eyes, the team had the opportunity to face map musicians such as Toya Delazy, Mi Casa and Lira.
We might be heading towards the end of May but there are still many wonderful things to look forward to in the world of Dermalogica. We will be part of Bailey Schneider’s (2 Oceans Vibe Radio Presenter) pamper party, Ster Kinekor’s Girlfriend getaway for the launch of The Great Gatsby and the Mercedes Benz Golf Day. We hope to see you all there.

The link between vitamins and the skin
Healthy skin is the end result of a well-hydrated skin that is duly protected from sun damage. Regular exercise and a balanced diet also keeps the skin healthy. There are a variety of vitamins for good skin that we consume in our diets, but it is also vital for us to apply these topically for optimum skin health. These nutrients not only maintain a healthy skin but a healthy body and mind.
Vitamin A
Synthetic vitamin A-like compounds called retinoids, such as tretinoin, applied directly to the skin have been used to treat acne, skin wrinkling and mottled pigmentation caused by chronic sun exposure. Vitamin A forces your skin cells to turn over faster, bringing new fresh skin cells to the surface.
Benefits:
- Essential for normal skin development
- Regulates growth and differentiation of cells
- Required for cell division
- Inhibits collagenase enzyme activity to prevent the breakdown of collagen
- Penetrates through the epidermis
- Stimulates biosynthesis of GAGS (glycoamino glycans), which provides the skin with volume
- Increases dermal thickness
- Increases protein and collagen synthesis
- Increases elasticity
- Improves the skin’s water barrier properties
Vitamin C
This vitamin plays an important role in healing wounds in the skin and in preventing scurvy. It’s a great ingredient used in skin care products.
Benefits:
- Photo-protective against UV
- Prevents immunosuppression
- Helps in the treatment of hyperpigmentation
- Stimulates fibroblasts for collagen biosynthesis
- Has anti-enzyme activity preventing the breakdown of collagen and elastin
Vitamin E
The American Academy of Dermatology recommends daily oral dosages of vitamin E to protect the body and for its antioxidant properties that are important for healthy skin. Vitamin E is an antioxidant preventing free radical damage. Based on observation that skin damage caused by the sun and other environmental agents are induced by free radicals, there is the possibility that that vitamin E may be effective in preventing skin damage.
Benefits:
- Passes through the dermis
- Absorbed through the follicles (pores)
- Not absorbed through sweat or sebaceous (oil) glands
- Scavenges free radicals, and protects cell membranes
- Collects in the capillaries of the dermis
- Smoothes the skin (a 5% solution shows a 36% improvement in skin smoothness)
- Reduces transepidermal moisture loss (TEML)
- Promotes wound healing (inhibits excess collagen formation)
- Anti-inflammatory (suppresses histamine response)
Vitamin F
Benefits:
- Restores the natural barrier function of the skin
- Maintains moisture in the skin
- Reduces dry and scaly skin
Invest in skin care products containing vitamins.
skinperfect primer spf30 features
At the International Dermal Institute, we have tested numerous formulations in order to create a multi-functional product that not only acts as a make-up primer, enhancing the appearance and duration of make-up, but conditions and treats the sign of aging while protecting the skin against environmental influences that can contribute to premature aging. skinperfect primer spf30 delivers three benefits in one for healthy, illuminated skin.
1. Radiant, even skin tone
Velvety silicones help even out skin texture, creating an instantly smooth surface. Pearl Powder and natural earth minerals provide a neutral tint, suitable for all skin tones, to enhance luminocity and radiance.
2. Invisible sun protection
Modern dispersions of Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide (physical sunscreen) contained in skinperfect primer spf30 provide broad-spectrum UVA and UVB defense without the intense chalky, whitening and drying effects so commonly associated with physical sunscreens.
3. Powerful skin treatment
As part of the AGE Smart system, skinperfect primer spf30 contains powerful peptides to stimulate collagen production, and ingredients known to fight the biochemical triggers that lead to skin aging, including Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS), also known as free radicals), Matrix Metalloproteinases (MMPs) and Advanced Glycation End-products (AGEs). For optimal coverage and treatment, smooth and blend skinperfect primer spf30 over entire face and throat after applying prescribed dermalogica moisturiser. skinperfect primer spf30 can be worn alone or underneath cover tint spf20 or make-up to help smooth fine lines and deliver a lasting make-up finish. As with all dermalogica products, skinperfect primer spf30 is free of artificial fragrance and colours.
Key ingredient: Hydrolyzed Pearl Powder
A fine powder rich in amino acids, calcium, sugars and peptides that stimulate cell renewal, fight glycation (hardening of protein) and help to fight pigmentation by inhibiting Tyrosinase (enzyme which trigger the process of colour/ melanin production) and enhancing skin luminocity.
Used over 2 000 years ago in China, Pearl Powder was an ingredient used in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine.
Mother-of-Pearl is produced by certain species of oyster to line the inside of their shells, preventing irritation from the rough outer shell and helping to protect against parasites. When an irritant gets inside a shell, the oyster protects itself by coating the irritant with the same material as its lining, creating a pearl.
The 3 new product innovations from dermalogica, skinperfect primer spf30, sheer tint spf20 and cover tint spf20 contains Hydrolyzed Pearl Powder. This helps to prolong the wear of the product while maintaining optimal moisture levels, regenerating, prevents hyperpigmentation and firms the skin.

dermalogica pre-shave guard in ‘The Manbox’
We quote an article written by Errol Razorline in the Manbox Times vol 2;
Look fan ‘tashtic this Movember
Some of the greatest men in history had moustaches; Albert Einstein, Tom Selleck and Chuck Norris are all known for their fuzzy lip-warmers. Now I’m not saying a moustache is a measure of masculinity, but what I do know, is that all men secretly want one. Corporate jobs and naggy girlfriends might hold us back, but when we’re alone shaving every morning, there’s a little part of us that wishes we didn’t have to. As kids we’d try and see who could make the biggest milk moustache, and then as teenagers we used our dad’s razors to encourage growth, teasing those with no sign of stubble…….. Thick, thin, neat or scraggy, a ‘tache is a babe magnet.
This begs the question, if chicks dig it so much, how come they’re always telling us to shave? We might not understand them, and shaving is a lus but we do it for them anyway.
This Movember whether you’re going for a handlebar, mutton chops or the pencil, make manscaping that much easier with dermalogica pre-shave guard. It makes hair softer, resulting in an easier, smoother slide action for your razor.
Heavy, tough beards require extra prepping that maximises beard softening without the high-alkaline ingredients that can aggravate and dry the skin. pre-shave guard shields and preps skin for shaving to help minimise razor burn and bumps.
Key ingredients
Camphor: Cools, soothes and helps tone to lift beard away from skin for maximum razor closeness. Helps control skin aggravation.
Clove Flower: Helps to soften beard and soothe skin against discomfort associated with razor burn.
Wheat Germ and Yeast: Soothing extracts that help combat aggravation, reddening and mechanical peeling associated with shaving. Helps defend skin’s natural protective barrier layer.
Menthol: Soothes and helps calm aggravation while imparting a ‘cool’ feeling on the skin.
Application
After cleansing, apply a thin layer to beard. Do not rinse off. Apply soothing shave cream over pre-shave guard. Shave, rinsing blade often. Rinse with warm water.
Thank you letter to Dermalogica
This letter was written by one of the dermalogica premium skincare professionals, Kokkie Barnard upon her return from LA. Her letter was addressed to Cherie Keating, the CEO of The Dermal Institute of South Africa.
“Dear Cherie
Although there were so many incredible facets to this trip and so many eye awakening moments, the one I will treasure the most was the enormous feeling of unity and pride that engulfed me as I stood amongst my fellow Dermalogica Tribe leaders all over the world on the stairs in front of the Dermalogica Institute. I realised that I was part of a much bigger family and understood for the first time that, although we have this incredible product (no doubt about that), the name Dermalogica stretches much further than that. I’ve discovered that it is a unique way of reaching out to people by really getting “under their skin” – walking with them the extra mile, caring and educating them and therefore truly lifting their spirit by connecting them with the hope of a better life. Going abroad definitely broadened my vision and simultaneously refueled my passion – it is amazing how one can conquer many battles and climb the highest mountains sustained by the knowing that you belong …….
Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.
Kokkie Barnard”
