From the desk of our skin expert...Let’s talk sun

We know that Ultra Violet (UV) rays wreak havoc on the skin, resulting in collagen breakdown, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation and a loss of elasticity. And, as if this structural damage is not bad enough, unprotected UV exposure is directly linked to an increased risk of skin cancer. In fact, one third of cancers diagnosed every year are skin cancers.

Interesting facts about UV exposure

  • Sunburn cooks the proteins in your skin, collagen and elastin. Very similar to putting your arm on a frying pan.
  • Did you know, glass protects mostly from UVB, but not UVA.
  • A person’s risk of melanoma doubles if he or she has had five or more sunburns in their life.
  • We need 10-15 minutes a day of sunlight which will allow us with sufficient vitamin D production. Older people need a little bit more.
  • There are 1,930 melanocytes (cells making colour in your skin protecting you from UV rays) per mm2 from the neck upwards and only 680 per mm2in the soles of the feet.

Damage to the skin caused by UV exposure

  • Redness is evident in 2-6 hours.
  • Increased cell growth which leads to the thickening of the skin.
  • Causes dehydration.
  • Leads to hyper (darker) and/ or hypo (lighter) pigmentation.
  • Enzymes are stimulated by UV rays to break down collagen and elastin, leading to wrinkles.
  • UV radiation causes the walls of blood vessels to become thinner leading to the skin bruising more easily in sun damaged areas.
  • Free radicals are activated; these attack cell membranes, lipids, proteins, all types of cells. They cause cancer by changing the genetic material RNA and DNA of the cell.
  • Immune system inhibited. When the skin is exposed to sunlight, certain chemicals are released that supress immune cells (white blood cells, T lymphocytes and Langerhans cells) and UVB is known to destroy Langerhans cells. This is also known as immunosuppression

Dermalogica created a range of products that provide an effective shield against UVA and UVB rays while improving the health and appearance of your skin.

Research shows that antioxidant vitamins are as important as sunscreens when defending the skin from damaging UV rays and free radicals. This is where our unique UV Smart Booster Technology comes in.

Power-packed microcapsules contain antioxidant vitamin C and E, delivering them directly to the skin surface and activating when exposed to UV rays. UV-activation allows us to increase the antioxidant protection shield the moment your skin needs it most.
