Spring is in the air and just like we take a moment to spring clean our homes, our skin care routine could also benefit from a good spring clean.

Spring means more sunny days spent outdoors which opens us up to more skin challenges. Transition your skin care routine and say goodbye to dull winter skin and hello to a brighter glow!

Here are a few tips to get spring skin ready.

Tip no.1

Start by spring cleaning your skincare products

Check the expiry dates. Products with an expiry date include your SPF as well as products containing high levels of salicylic acid. Products also have a shelf life of 6 months to a year once opened. Reference the back of the product for more information. Pro tip: add a sticker on your products to help remind you when it was opened.

Don’t forget to check your make-up products and brushes. Bacteria breeds in warm, dark and moist places such as your bathroom. When you apply your make-up daily, tiny organisms from the skin along with dead skin cells, dirt and oil transfer to your make-up brushes. Ensure that you clean your makeup brushes at least once a week, especially if you are prone to breakouts.

Tip no.2

Say hello to a squeaky-clean skin

Excess oil, make-up, sunblock and other environmental pollutants can lead to dehydrated and acne-prone skin. Simply cleansing twice a day is not enough. Add a double cleanse routine starting with an oil-based formula to emulsify debris from the skin, followed by a water-soluble cleanser for a thorough and deep clean, without stripping the skin.

Determine if you are dealing with dryness, oiliness, sensitivity or breakouts before you choose a cleanser. During the winter months, our skin tends to be drier than usual and would be advised to opt for a creamier cleanser. Moving into spring and temperatures start to change, you might want to switch to a foamy, gel cleanser that is lighter on the skin.

Product recommendation:

Precleanse – this oil and make-up busting precleansing oil dissolve make-up, waterproof mascara, sunscreens and sebum for cleaner and smoother skin. This lightweight cleansing oil is great for all skin types and conditions, and oily skin too!

Special cleansing gel– a soap-free foaming gel cleanser that is pH balanced and suited for all skin types. This water-soluble cleanser will remove impurities thoroughly without stripping the skin.

Tip no.3

Out with the old, in with the new!

A step often missed during the winter months is exfoliation. By incorporating an exfoliator into your skin care regimen you will get rid of that dull winter skin build-up and see great improvements in your skin’s luminosity and skin texture, for a smoother, more radiant complexion.

Product recommendation:

Daily microfoliant– this rice-based powder exfoliant is gentle enough to be used daily. It uses a combination of chemical and physical exfoliants to boost cell renewal and remove dull dead skin cells for visibly brighter and smoother skin.

Tip no.4

Change is as good as a holiday!

It is easy to fall into the habit of sticking to what we know, but there is value in changing your products up once in a while. There is no better way to prepare your skin for spring than introducing a serum rich in antioxidants that combat free radical formation caused by UV radiation, pollution, and other environmental factors. Vitamin C is a powerful ingredient that boosts the immune system of the skin, brightens, firms and reduces the appearance of fine lines. When looking to add a vitamin C serum to your skin care regimen make sure you go for a stable and bioavailable form of vitamin C for maximum results.

Product recommendation:

Biolumin-c serum - A high-performance serum that works with the skin’s defenses for brighter, firmer and more radiant skin. Look out for our NEW smart response serum coming in October!

Tip no.5

Protection is key

It is important to layer sunscreen into your skin care regimen all year round but certainly not to be missed when heading into the warmer sunnier months. The UV intensity starts to increase as temperatures rise as we are much closer to the sun. Unprotected sun exposure leads to hyperpigmentation, ageing skin and skin cancer.

To keep your regimen light for spring/summer, look for a 2-in-1 moisturiser with a built-in broad-spectrum SPF.

Product recommendation:

Prisma protect spf30 - a multi-tasking formula that does more than simply defend skin against UV rays. It has a balance of smart ingredients that enhance skin’s moisture level and radiance as well as more traditional ingredients that fight free radicals and provide UV protection.

Tip no.6

Spritz into spring

During warmer months we naturally drink more water thinking we are well hydrated, but the skin can only absorb a limited amount of water as it is not seen as a survival organ. Because of this, it is important to introduce an easy topical spritz to keep your skin well hydrated and feeling fresh throughout the day.

Product recommendation:

Multi-active toner – an ultra-light, hydrating spritz that does not strip the skin. Pop it into your handbag and spritz over the skin as needed, even over make-up

Consistency is Key
