How sunscreen works

How sunscreen works: physical vs. chemical

Here are the facts you need so you can choose the best sunscreen for your skin

Story highlights

• Physical sunscreen uses minerals that sit on top of your skin and reflect away UV rays.
• Chemical sunscreen uses ingredients that absorb into the skin.

The difference between physical and chemical sunscreen

There are two main types of sunscreen: physical and chemical. Both have their own unique properties and benefits, and both help protect the skin from UV rays.

Benefits of physical sunscreen

Physical sunscreen, also called mineral sunscreen, sits on top of the skin. Most physical sunscreens leave a white or tinted residue on the skin, but newer formulas like Invisible Physical Defense SPF30 have been made ultra-sheer to help prevent a chalky effect. To identify this type of sunscreen, look for the words “mineral”, or “physical” as well as active ingredients like Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide.

Physical Sunscreen:

• Helps protect against UVA and UVB rays
• Protects as soon as it’s applied – there’s no need to wait before exposing skin to daylight
• Is generally comfortable for all skin types and conditions, particularly sensitive skin

The benefits of chemical sunscreen

Chemical sunscreen uses ingredients that absorb into the skin and transforms UV rays into heat. This type of sunscreen tends to be popular because it feels like and looks unnoticeable.

Chemical sunscreen:

• Helps protect against UVA and UVB rays
• Needs time to absorb – 15 to 30 minutes – before exposing skin to daylight
• Is generally comfortable for most skin types and conditions
• Tends to be more water and sweat resistant

Dermalogica's commitment to excellence is personified through the expert advice provided by professional skin therapists. Professional product prescription and tailor-made professional facial treatments (called skin treatments), together with in-depth knowledge and training are critical in order for skin therapists to be able to address a vast variety of skin concerns and conditions. How we ensure that you - our loyal customer - experience this excellence is through equipping therapists with sufficient training, ensuring that dermalogica trained professional skin therapists are the best in the business.

Dermalogica ranks our professional skin care therapists’ level of expertise, together with the degree of advice they can offer. This enables you, the client, to make a consultation or skin treatment booking with a skin care therapist that holds at least a certified status that matches your specific skin concern or skin treatment requirement. This is particularly important when it comes to treating acne scarring or signs of ageing with advanced level chemical peels. As a result, dermalogica will always ensure that the skin care therapist caring for your skin has - without a doubt - the dermalogica standard of knowledge, expertise and training to do so.
