Skin goals

In today’s world we have information at the tips of our fingers, with many self-proclaimed experts giving advice on how to take care of our skin. This can lead to more confusion about what skincare really matters and what will best address our skin needs. Every skin goal that we set for ourselves will greatly depend on getting the basics right, to ensure our skin is functioning optimally by working with the skin’s natural circadian rhythms 24 hours a day!

Let’s talk about skin basics!

Research conducted by the international dermal institute shows that most women only spend 20 seconds washing their face.

This is simply not enough considering that we are exposing our skins to environmental pollutants, cosmetics and combining this with the skin’s natural sebum (oil) secretions. A splash of water and 20 seconds of cleansing can’t penetrate this layer of oil-based dirt and debris that coat the skin’s surface.

At Dermalogica skin health is vitally important to us and our double cleansing principle should be the starting point of any skin goal.

The art of double cleansing:

Dermalogica’s Precleanse is a lightweight Olive and Apricot Kernel-based cleansing oil that gently liquefies sebum and oil- based dirt and debris from the skin’s surface. The water loving formula enables Precleanse and the liquefied oil-based debris to be readily rinsed away with water without leaving behind any oily residue and preparing your skin for your Dermalogica second cleanse.

Exfoliation: What’s the big deal?

The human skin produces about 1 million skin cells every 40 minutes, sheds over 30 000 dead skin cells every minute which means we lose about 4 kilograms of dead skin cells every year!

As our skin cells renew from the deepest layer of the epidermis, the more surface cells harden and lose moisture resulting in desquamation or shedding of dead skin cells. Unfortunately, not all these dead skin cells effectively shed from the surface of the skin and can lead to clogging of pores and underlying congestion. As we age desquamation and cell renewal slows down dramatically, resulting in dull devitalised skin.

Exfoliating 2 to 3 times a week will remove these dulling dead skin cells, increase the cell renewal process and micro circulation resulting in smoother healthier looking skin!

Are toners a must-have?

Toners are a valuable step of any skincare routine and spritz toners are usually the easiest and most effective way to tone.

Spritzing with a hydrating toner adds essential moisture to the skin and helps other products to absorb easily and evenly into the skin. After toning, you are ready to apply your skin specific serum and moisturiser.

The added benefit of a spray toner is that you can keep a travel size in your bag and freshen and hydrate your skin throughout the day, even directly over make-up.

Target and treat

Serums are concentrated treatment products that can either be water-based or oil-based. They contain much higher concentrations of active ingredients such as vitamins, peptides, hyaluronic acid and hydroxy acids than a moisturizer. Because of the super-concentrated number of actives and the lightweight, non-occlusive nature of serums, the actives can more readily penetrate the skin, delivering actives to the targeted site in the skin. Serums can be formulated to address specific skin conditions such as pigmentation, hydration, aging skin and acne to name a few.

Moisturise and protect

No matter what your skin type may be, everyone should moisturise! Even if your skin is oily, choosing the right moisturizer will be greatly beneficial for the skin.

Moisturisers seal moisture into skin and protect the skin’s barrier. They reinforce the natural protective barrier by restoring the balance of water and lipids. This is the primary factor in choosing a moisturiser: what does the skin need? More hydration? More oil? Or a combination of both?

You can also select moisturisers based on weight. The heavier they are the more oil they contain. If they’re lighter, they contain more water and the less oil, some are even completely oil free.

Dermatologists would agree that sunscreen is the most important part of your skin care regimen. The number 1 cause of wrinkles is sun damage, so it's important to use sunscreen from your early years on, even in winter and on cloudy days. A great trick is to have two moisturizers: one for day that includes UV protection and one for night.

Dermalogica Daylight Defense products have sophisticated formulations that not only offer sun protection but also actively treat skin concerns, such as skin aging, oiliness, and sensitivity.

At Dermalogica, we continually research the latest scientific breakthroughs and ingredient technologies to ensure our SPF formulas are delivering the best results to shield the skin from harmful UV rays and protect against damaging skin-aging free radicals.
